Stage One: Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease, and immediate treatment may provide a complete cure. During this stage, the gums become inflamed because of bacteria harbored between the teeth and gum “pockets.” Some people have very few symptoms, while others may notice that their gums are red and tend to bleed easily.
Stage Two: Periodontitis
At this point, the gum disease has begun to spread and break down healthy gum tissues, as well as teeth and bones. If you have periodontitis, you will likely notice that you have reoccurring bad breath, your gums bleed on a regular basis, your gums ache or hurt, and/or you notice the gums starting to recede from the teeth. Proper maintenance at our dental office and at home can help prevent it from progressing further.
Stage Three: Advanced Periodontitis
When gum disease reaches this stage, you are at risk of losing teeth and bone density, as well as gum tissues. One sign of advanced periodontitis is loose teeth, or teeth that have begun to noticeably shift.
