What Is TMJ and Why Does It Happen?
TMJ, also referred to as TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), is a condition affecting the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. This causes jaw pain to radiate throughout the head and neck, often resulting in severe discomfort all day, as well as other issues.
There is no one reason that TMJ occurs. Some people are simply born with a precondition that leads to problems with the way their upper and lower jaws fit together. Other individuals may experience a traumatic event that shifts the jaw. Sometimes, teeth grinding – called bruxism – is the culprit.
